Special Finish: How to Avoid a Step at the End of Your Amigurumi
When a piece is worked in a spiral, the last stitch can leave a small step in the finish. This is especially noticeable on exposed parts such as arms, legs or ears.
Invisible Finish in Crochet
An invisible finish is a simple way to finish a crochet piece without leaving a visible step in the final round. It is particularly useful for amigurumi and pieces worked in a spiral.
Step by Step
- Complete the last stitch of the round as usual.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 10 to 15 cm to make finishing easier.
- Pull the yarn tail completely through the last loop and remove the crochet hook.
- Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle.
- Skip 1 stitch and insert the needle under both loops of the next stitch, from back to front, as shown in the photograph.
- Next, insert the needle into the starting stitch, passing through the middle of the chains from back to front and picking up only the front loop.
- Gently pull the yarn until the new loop is approximately the same size as the other loops in the round. Avoid pulling too tightly: the finish should look natural and match the tension of the other stitches.
- Pass the needle under both loops of the second stitch again, this time from front to back.
- Finally, weave the yarn tail into the inside of the piece, passing it through a few stitches before trimming the excess.
Result: a continuous edge without the usual step or knot at the last stitch.
Tip: the secret to a good invisible finish is not to pull the yarn too tightly. The loop you create should match the size of the others so that it is difficult to see where the round ends.
